The Pirandello Italian Language Center (PILC) was founded in 1973 when Italian Consul General in Boston, Franco Faa’ di Bruno, approached East Boston High School Teacher and immigrant from Vicenza, Ernesto “ Tino” Valdesolo, and asked him to start a language center for children of second and third generation Italians living in the Boston area. Some financial assistance was promised only if Tino could initially self- fund the program and run it for the first two years. The first home of the PILC was Saint John’s School. This school has hosted all classes since 1973 and Tino has been managing the programs ever since.
Originally established for children and adults of Italian descent, the PILC has helped thousands of second, third and fourth generation connect with their heritage, presenting them with a realistic picture of contemporary Italy and its rich historical and cultural traditions. Today PILC is open to students of all ethnic origin, offering Saturday morning classes ( 10:00 a.m.– 12:30 p.m.) to both children ( 3 to 16 years of age) and adults for 26 weeks. Now part of Saint Leonard’s parish, the school boasts a diverse and enthusiastic membership taught by talented native-speaking instructors.
The PILC continues to be a beacon of Italian culture. It partners with local Italian businesses and like-minded organizations that share the collective mission of maintaining and celebrating Italian heritage and customs in Boston.
